Nathan Whittacre, President & CEO of Stimulus Technologies, sat down with the CBS 8News Now Team to discuss protecting businesses from hackers on their afternoon news show, Las Vegas Now. During the interview, Nathan talked about a layered approach to protecting businesses from hackers, phishing scams, and ransomware attacks.

What is a layered approach?

No business is 100% protected and there isn't one thing that will completely protect a business, but there are steps that can be taken to protect businesses from cyber-attack. Having anti-virus software and a firewall is just one step to protection, but it doesn't cover everything. Software must be updated regularly to make sure networks are being protected from the latest threats and data should be backed up in case a system is hacked.

As Nathan states, "The number one threat to us, and our businesses, is ourselves."

It can be easy to forget to do an update, double-check a link we're clicking on, or see that an email came from an illegitimate source.

Nathan goes on to say, "We're going through our day so fast and we're not paying attention to who's sending us information, clicking on things we probably shouldn't be clicking on. So just taking the time to slow down and be aware that the threat is so pervasive out there."

Stimulus Technologies offers a network assessment that determines what protection a business has, where there could be threats, and an action plan for keeping a business safe from threats in the future.
